A graduate of the University of British Columbia in Theatre, Elizabeth has worked from coast to coast as an actor including a stint at the Stratford Festival. For Shakespeare by the Sea she has directed The Mercy Seat, The Taming of the Shrew, Othello, Love's Labours Lost, Twelfth Night, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare(abridged), Measure for Measure, The Agony and Ecstacy of Steve Jobs, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice, Antony and Cleopatra and I Am My Own Wife. She was a Merritt award nominee for her direction of Othello and The Merchant of Venice. She has appeared in three productions at Shakespeare by the Sea – as Volumnia in Coriolanus, as The Duchess of York in Richard III and The Countess in All's Well That Ends Well. Shakespeare by the Sea received the Merritt Legacy Award in 2013. For the 2016 season she will direct As You Like It.
She has appeared in numerous film and television shows. She moved to Halifax in 1988 and in 1994 she was a co-founder of Halifax’s Shakespeare by the Sea. She served as General Manager for the first 11 years and was appointed Artistic Director in 2007. With an eye to the future she brought on Jesse MacLean as Co-Artistic Director in 2010. In a fit of utter madness, she allowed Thomas Gordon Smith to take on the design of all media information, then, said yes to allowing him to do Tom Smith's Stupid Christmas For Jerks. There are parts of her brain that require major upgrades. Her only solace is that Tom Smith is getting older every year and maybe he will grow up someday. All that aside, she LOVES this company and the great joy and energy that everyone – especially Jesse MacLean and Tom Smith – brings to her life.
