Shakespeare was a genius at showing us all the things we have in common: jealousy, love, ambition, loss. Nowhere is it more clearly expressed than in OTHELLO. The play, written in 1604, is set into motion when Othello, a heroic black General in the service of Venice, appoints Michael Cassio, and not the older Iago as his chief lieutenant. Iago plots Othello’s downfall by falsely implicating Othello’s new wife, Desdemona, in a love affair with Michael Cassio. Iago knows what jealousy can do and he goes to work on Othello. Sit back and enjoy being manipulated by one of the greatest villains in literature.
