CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

ROSALIND

Daughter to the banished Duke, Rosalind is the energetic engine of As You Like It. Rosalind is witty, passionate, stubborn, creative and joyous. One of Shakespeare’s greatest heroines and most notable “trouser roles”, Rosalind explores multiple expressions of gender. In the play, Rosalind is sometimes referred to as “lady” and sometimes as “boy”. We strongly encourage submissions from actors who are trans, non-binary, and/or gender expansive for this role.

OLIVER (or OLIVIA)/JAQUES

OLIVER/OLIVIA: The elder sibling of Orlando and head of the family following their father’s passing. Burdened with responsibility, Oliver/Olivia resents Orlando. In the forest they fall in love with Celia and embrace a rural life.

JAQUES: Banished alongside Duke Senior in the forest of Arden, “The Melancholy Jaques” is cynical and emotional. Jaques feels like an outsider, and is always quick with a witty response.

CELIA

The daughter to the new Duke, and cousin of Rosalind, Celia is fiercely loyal and determined. Celia is witty and fun, and beloved by those at court and in the forest.

The youngest sibling in a wealthy family, Orlando is impulsive, determined and passionate. Orlando falls instantly in love with Rosalind, but needs some tutoring in the ways of romance.

DUKE FREDERICK/DUKE SENIOR

DUKE FREDERICK: Usurps Duke Senior to rule at Court. Quick to Anger.

DUKE SENIOR: Banished to the forest, Duke Senior is well suited to rural life! Duke Senior is a loving parent and respected leader.

AUDREY: A shepherd in the forest, later the love interest of Touchstone. What Audrey lacks in cleverness is made up for in earnestness!

SECOND LORD: A companion to the banished Duke.
